There were 75 tables in the room. Each table had handheld keypads and each person had their own ‘credit card’…..be careful not to press an extra zero! The bidder’s name would appear next to the item. It was fun watching the bids go back and forth and go up and up and up!

Help, there’s a Chinese man in my closet!!

Oh, do I wish this were my closet!!! This week I dropped by LIII LIII/Alan Chan to pick up some shoes he was repairing for me. They are located in Admiralty Centre and its actually in two small shops, one shop has the left shoe and the other shop the right! Both shops are about the size of an American walk-in closet and if you bump the wrong way 50 right shoes may fall in your lap! Alan Chan is one of the first stops I make with friends visiting Hong Kong. He can copy ANYTHING but its much more fun a take a much too high Jimmy Choo or Christian Louboutin pair of heels, change the heel height, change the leather to python, and have it made to fit your foot and yours alone! Its really like being a kid in a candy shop. A pair will set you back around $250USD but oh how much fun!!!

These are my favorite, most comfortable pair of heels. I’ve had them for 5 years and now they are as good as new!

A ‘Designer’ Haircut

Well this is my youngest daughter Anna Grace, at the time 8 months, getting a haircut with Ringo at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Salon in Hong Kong.  Both Anna Grace, 3 years old now, and her sister Mary, 10 months,  got their first haircut by my mom while they were sleeping.  My girls were born with more than a full head of hair.  They seriously needed a hair clip from birth.  I hate having their hair cut.  I know it grows back but nonetheless, I don’t like doing it.  A few nights ago I caught a glimpse of my beautiful 3 year old running around the house and an image popped in my head of Ruby Sue, Clark Griswald’s niece in Christmas Vacation.  If you haven’t seen this, your Christmas hasn’t been complete.  I’m pretty sure Ruby Sue never had a haircut or a hairbrush for that matter.  After dinner I cut 5 inches!!!  It would have been less if it weren’t for my husband in the background taunting me to really go for it.  Well we gave her sparkling apple juice, a bowl of marshmallows and a plastic garbage bag for her drape.  Since the haircut I’ve bought some proper scissors but I had to use a very heavy pair of dressmaker shears.  Its done; just don’t look too carefully.

Another Set of Pillows

Well, we are back in Hong Kong after a nice long weekend in Phuket.  We filled our days with swimming and our nights with eating…and my husband, Jim, and I along with a friend of ours managed to squeeze in a trip to the Jim Thompson Outlet.  I was planning on finding the perfect fabric to recover some recently purchased dining chairs.  I didn’t buy the fabric I was searching for but I did buy a few sets of silk pillows that can really add the final touches to the most luxurious bed.

When I was working for Bunny Williams, I remember being so excited to learn how she liked to make a bed.  All the bed sheets, shams, and duvet covers were either white and occasionally cream color with custom embroidery in the color scheme as the rest of the fabrics in the bedroom.  I think that has become one of my favorite things as an interior designer, choosing and customizing the bed linens for my clients’ bedrooms.

When we moved to Hong Kong, almost 7 years ago, we came with 4 large suitcases of clothes and 2 FedEx boxes (carrying mostly my design books and magazines).  In one suitcase was a set of cream colored floral jacquard sheets, shams, and a beautiful cream dupioni silk pleated duvet by Donna Karan.  Before I found this duvet cover I was completely content with my crisp white cotton duvet cover and matching sheet set.  I fell in love with this duvet.  I think I realize now that one reason I loved it so much is because it was the exact color and feel of the silk from my wedding dress.  We were really newlyweds when we moved abroad.  I remember finally receiving and opening the boxes of William Yeoward crystal and Royal Crown Derby china that had just been shipped from our wedding registry and then watching the moving company pack them again to put into storage.  I decided if I couldn’t take our wedding china or crystal to Hong Kong then I would make sure to at least take beautiful bed linens.  Soon after we moved our duvet cover was mistakenly put in the washing machine.  It wasn’t destroyed but it was never the same.  I tried to have it copied once on a trip to Hoi An, Vietnam but even there the ladies quoted me a crazy price to do all the pleating work.  Th is summer when I was back in the U.S. I found another cover by Donna Karan that I like.  Its very similar but its not silk.  Click on the picture below if you want to check out the rest of the Donna Karan Bedding Collection at Horchow.

So this weekend at the outlet I was sorting through a selection of Jim Thompson pillow shams that I liked and my husband told me we should buy the cream ones for our bed.  He is a trained architect and he does have great taste but I was still surprised how much he liked these floral pattern pillow covers.  We bought them and I put them on the bed soon after unpacking our bags.  They look great.  I think our bed will always be made in the same cream color.  It might change slightly but hopefully we will always find something that we both like. Recently I ordered customized bedding for one of my clients.  I can’t wait for everything to arrive so I can put it all together.  I hope it will make them feel like they have something special and unique, something no one else has.  I may have found a set of pillows for their bed too.

My To Do List

Well, I feel like I can cross off a few items from my ‘To Do’ list.  If you’re reading this then you know I’ve launched my website and blog.  Probably the most difficult thing for me was developing my logo.  I hired a graphic designer to come up with some choices but unfortunately none of them felt right.  So I guess that pushed me to come up with it myself.  After many versions I think it finally feels like, ‘me’!  Last week, the day before my birthday, I received my new business stationary.  I think I may have a bit of a crazy thing for fine paper.  I think the most important thing for my wedding may have been our hand engraved invitations from a small shop in London.  Was that necessary; probably not, but to this day I still get sentimental when I see our copperplate engraving on a side table in our living room.  Well my business stationary is not hand engraved and I probably drove the shop who printed it  a little nuts (a lot nuts!), move it to the left 5cm, oh, too much, are you sure that is Pantone Color 1785…but its done.  I have no excuses now about catching up on some overdue thank you now!  I’ve added a picture of the copperplate from our invitations as well as a link to Gee Brothers, the shop that made it. I guess its been our favorite coaster!

I’m also excited about my new ipad.  I bought it for my business but I think its more of a toy  for my 3 year old.  The ipad needs a good wipe down before my design meetings.  There’s no question from all the  sticky fingerprints that its getting a good workout.  She’s already figured out how to save some of her drawings.  Check out her latest cake design for ‘Cake Doodle App’ and click on the picture if you want a great creative game, perfect for 15 hour flights!  Good thing for screen protectors!  I was able to grab it just long enough to snap a shot!

I’m super excited about my buying/beach trip this month to Phuket, Thailand.  I’m a sucker for Jim Thompson fabrics and strategically, there is an Jim Thompson OUTLET a hop, skip, and a jump from where were staying.  Last summer, I drug my 4 month pregnant body, my 2 year old, my visiting brother, and my husband to the bi-yearly Jim Thompson sale in Bangkok.  Its something I had wanted to do for years.  Is it strange that I can’t think of a more romantic anniversary gift than 30 yards of fabric for a pair of new sofas?  One of the top managers for Jim Thompson saw me struggling to sort out how to ship all our purchases back to Hong Kong.  She proceeded to have her head of logistics ‘make’ boxes for the fabric and set up the pick-up and delivery with DHL.  This is when being preganant comes in handy; oh, and maybe a handsome husband as well!  Check out my daughter and my brother in the photo below. We were headed to the sale…there was something for everyone!  Click the photo for a link to the Jim Thompson site.

One little girl’s father made the highest bid and won a personalized pillow and an hour and a half consultation on how to decorate her room. I’m looking forward to our appointment! I remember being in 4th grade and sitting down with my mom’s interior designer to interview her for a school project. I guess I knew early on what I really wanted to do!

Some Light Reading

Well we just returned from a visit to the U.S. Before we boarded the much dreaded 15 hour flight I made my usual raid of design magazines at the Hudson News store in the O’Hare International terminal. I grabbed copies of Elle Decor, Traditional Homes, and Veranda with all the intentions of reading them front to back. Instead I only managed to flip through them in the dark as not to wake my sleeping babies sitting in car seats between my husband and I. Honestly, I usually just look at the pictures anyway so it wasn’t so bad. Its always fun to see Beeline by Bunny Williams being featured in a magazine and it seems like these days she’s in just about every magazine I can put my hands on but I’m surprised none the less every time. Elle Decor and Traditional Home were highlighting some of her new lamps-Scarlet Lamp and Brushstroke Lamp. I flipped to one of the pages and stretched across the girls to show my husband. He stared at the page for awhile and finally smiled when he realized what I was excited about. Just last week he was reviewing these new lamps before sending them to Bunny’s office in New York. Its fun being a part of a great collection. It seems like just yesterday Bunny and I were visiting factories in Asia to see her samples for Collection 1.

Its Finally Here!

T oday marks the first entry for Beverly McCloskey Interiors.  I’ve spent the last 6 years living, working, and traveling all over Asia.  Each day is a fresh and unexpected experience.  While I miss a lot about living and designing ‘back home’, I find that Asia stretches me in so many ways, especially in my design perspective and approach.  Come along with me and experience it for yourself! I feel like I’m always in the middle of designing something, whether its an apartment for a client here in Hong Kong, a flower arrangement for a get together, or something for my Etsy shop such as custom pillows from a fabulous textile I found while traveling!
